General Information about the Annapurna Region
The Annapurna region, which spans 80 km between the Kali Gandaki River in the west and the Marsayangdi River in the east, is located in the middle of the Nepalese Himalayas. To the north is the enigmatic and shrouded region of Mustang, which was closed until recently. 1eaks surround the hump-shaped Annapurna I (8091m). Just two examples include the snow-covered Annapurna III (7555m) and the rocky Annapurna II (7937m). The Sanskrit name Annapurna means “goddess of fertility.”
A French expedition made the first ascent of Annapurna in 1950, starting from the North Annapurna Glacier. It was an outstanding accomplishment among the 8000ers and the start of a renaissance in Nepalese Himalayan mountaineering. The first ascent of Annapurna II was made in 1960 by a group of mountaineers from India, Nepal, and the United Kingdom.
The renowned lake city of Pokhara is situated at the foot of the Annapurna range. It’s a fantastic spot to organize a tour of this legendary region. In Pokhara, many people start shorter treks. About two-thirds of Nepal’s trekkers travel to the Annapurna area. There are many hotels in the hills, and the location is easily accessible. The walks provide beautiful views of high mountains and lowland communities in this area. The Pokhara region’s surroundings are popular with trekkers due to the area’s reduced likelihood of altitude-related issues.
In the Annapurna Himal, there are numerous well-traveled trekking trails, much like the Khumbu region of Mount Everest. Other options include the circular route that stops in Ghorepani, the Annapurna circuit that includes the highest Tilicho lake, the Annapurna Sanctuary, and the renowned ABC Trek (Annapurna Base Camp). The Jomsom and Muktinath treks are two other well-known treks. However, because treks to Mustang and Nar-Phu Valley are subject to particular limitations, this destination is covered on a separate page about treks in restricted areas. Mustang is located in the Annapurna region, and to the north and northeast is Nar-Phu Valley.
